This past summer I tried a new schedule. Typically the kids spend the summer watching movies but this year I wanted to try a routine that would provide LOTS of FUN combined with working on therapy skills. My goal was to make it feel like summer camp for them. A new routine, lots of fund activities and crafts they usually don't get to do....etc.
Each morning started with all the Miriam Center kids in 1 room and all the staff. We had a time of devotion and prayer. Followed by group exercise. We rotated through a video, kids theraband program, and a kids YOGA program. The kids and staff enjoyed this time.
After our 45 minutes of group time we splint into 2 groups. The little guys stayed in the New Room and all the other kids headed to the patio and classroom. There was also a bike and stander schedule for both the groups. I had the kids grouped into groups of 2-3 kids and each staff member at the Miriam Center had a set of kids. Each day they blindly picked who they had.
GROUP 1- The little guys (severe and profound kiddos) had a schedule to follow up on the wall. Each of those kids rotated through 3 different activities (swinging, stander, massage/stretching, Hand-over Hand play with toys, bike, etc.).
GROUP 2- I pre-set up about 20 different activities that the kids could rotate through. They got to choose what activities they wanted to participate in. There was a variety of activities to choose from that worked on fine motor skills, hand strengthening skills, sensory exploration, building, gross motor/coordination, crafts, etc. Tried to have at least 1 of each of the above available each day.
A FEW FUN PICTURES FROM 4th of July
THE BIKE IS ALWAYS A FAVORITE!
We were also blessed to have a fun Party
We had Fun times of CRAFTS, PAINTING, STICKERS, etc.
There was even a talent show on campus and the older boys did a synchronized dance. They did AWSOME!
It was ALOT of work to pull off BUT as you can see from the pictures above it was so worth it!!!! SO MUCH FUN was had. It would not have been possible to pull off without my amazing therapy staff and the amazing staff at the Miriam Center! SO MANY MEMORIES MADE!
