Prisca has been coming to the outreach program
for the last couple years. For the longest time she never smiled & was very
serious during outreach but this past summer there was a switch. I am not sure
if it was because she was more comfortable at outreach or what but I just love
seeing her smile! Prisca has Spastic Cerebral Palsy which means her muscles are
tight which make it hard for her to move her arms & legs. She has no cognitive
impairments & is completely aware of what is going on around her. This
summer she started grasping objects with her left hand and can grasp and
release objects purposefully. She absolutely loves playing with toys with the
required assistance to do so.
Her favorite toys are the piggy bank, IPAD, and
swing. This summer Prisca had knee immobilizers made and was fitted for ankle
orthosis that has allowed her to walk with assistance of me pushing her feet
forward with mine. During walking tasks is when I see her biggest smile emerge…actually
as soon as I place her braces on, she knows what is coming and that smile
emerges.
I had the privilege of visiting
Prisca at her home in PdP earlier this year. It was a Bittersweet moment… The BITTER
part: Found out she lives in an orphanage & her mother abandoned her at the
La Pointe hospital...After returning to the mission I found out that she was
abandoned when she was little and the lady that brought her every week to
outreach that I thought was her mother was actually one of the workers at the
orphanage where she resides. Prisca is the only disabled child at this small
orphanage. The SWEET part: watching her light up when we arrived, seeing the other kids
interact with her, seeing this amazing small orphanage run completely by
Haitians. I loved the fact we were able to bless this orphanage with a solar
powered Christian 4VEH radio with MP3 version of the New Testament in Creole.
I am so thankful that this
orphanage see the benefits and worth of taking the time & money to bring
Prisca an hour each way to outreach 1x a week. I love that fact that she gets
that 1:1 attention for 4 hours 1x a week!
Please keep Prisca in your prayers…
~Pray that she knows how loved
& special she is
~Pray that she will continue to
gain strength & new skills
~ Pray for the orphanage workers
to continue to see the benefit in bringing her to outreach
